The Academy has announced the VFX short list for the 84th Academy Awards. Two films that The Third Floor helped bring to the big screen are on the list: "Captain America: The First Avenger" (The Third Floor provided postvis) and "X-Men: First Class" (The Third Floor provided previs). On Jan. 19 at the Academy’s Visual Effects Bakeoff five of the ten films will be chosen for final Oscar consideration.

We had to figure out where to put the camera to capture the size and speed of these ships — I’m talking about 900-foot-long ships traveling at 30 knots — while getting them to where they needed to be for story points. Disney’s "Oz The Great and Powerful" trailer and official site are up! The Third Floor has been hard at work on previs and postvis for director Sam Raimi’s new film. The Third Floor crafted previs first in Los Angeles, then the previs team spent close to a year on location in Detroit working with Sam Raimi to visualize this fantastical adventure set in the Land of Oz. "Oz The Great and Powerful" opens in theaters March 8, 2013.

In the recent Los Angeles Times story "How the movie ‘Flight’ got off the ground", Robert Zemeckis discusses his new movie and how previsualization, done by digital artists at The Third Floor, helped the production save time and preserve budget by mapping out the film’s most complex and potentially costly sequence — the plane crash — in advance. As stated in the article, the process — which included animating the scene in previs and then supporting the director with virtual camera layout sessions within a CG version of the live set, helped Zemeckis and team get "a clear understanding of how each shot would look and could be executed efficiently."

"Flight" opens in the US Nov. 2, 2012. The Third Floor previsualized some exciting scenes for Robert Zemeckis’ Flight, a live-action drama for Paramount Pictures starring Denzel Washington. Work focused on complicated sequences in the aircraft — including moments where the plane
was to be inverted, with The Third Floor previsualizing action within a CG version of the live set. As on prior collaborations with Mr. Zemeckis, The Third Floor also supported virtual layout sessions that enabled the director’s camera to be captured and choreographed with digital previs versions of the environment.
The Third Floor provided previs, postvis and techvis for Disney’s ‘Oz:The Great and Powerful’ contributing to production and post-production on the Wizard of Oz prequel for over two years. Working directly with Sam Raimi and his visual effects, editorial, art, storyboard departments, stunt and set design teams, The Third Floor supported digital planning and realization for many of the movie’s scenes and also provided support for virtual location scouting and shoots.

The Third Floor was the sole previs company for ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’, a modern take on the classic fairy tale from Warner Bros. Pictures and director Bryan Singer. In addition to providing previs and postvis, The Third Floor assisted the production with asset creation for virtual production shooting. From climbing the Bean Stalk to traveling through the land of the Giants, this advanced visualization work helped the filmmakers make their most of their creative ideas and visual effects.
