All of The Third Floor’s founders designed sequences for Star Wars: Episode III. Together, the Skywalker Ranch Team delivered over 7000 iterations of shots for George Lucas and his editors. The trick was to keep one step ahead of Lucas’ imagination, since no formal script pages or storyboards were provided during the production. This gave the previs artists a lot of freedom to propose shot ideas for the film.
The 3D assets were created by the previs team based on designs provided by the Lucasfilm Art Department. Synergistic collaboration between Art Directors and the previs team is one of the cornerstones of The Third Floor’s approach to previsualization. On Episode III, the Art Directors and Creature Designers inspired the previs team, who in turn were inspired to paint over select frames of the previs, as a guide for ILM.
Star Wars was also the first opportunity for the Third Floor founders to work with Steven Spielberg, who became a Guest Director on the film. The Obi-Wan / Grievous Chase was the first sequence with Spielberg at the helm. Later, the previs team worked with Spielberg on the Emperor / Yoda Fight and all of the ground battle scenes, including the attack on the Wookie home world. All of these amazing experiences further convinced the Third Floor Founders to do whatever to takes to keep this talented team together.
