[One shot in particular that I really, really wanted to get, we ended up nailing in the previs.] Matt Reeves (Director), on the Cloverfield DVD Behind the Scenes

Beowulf

Two of The Third Floor’s founding members were drafted to work directly with Robert Zemeckis during the production of Beowulf. They became two of Zemeckis’ most trusted cinematic collaborators, using a 3D Virtual Camera system to perform real-time hand-held camera moves. This process, known as Director’s Layout or “DLO”, was developed initially for Polar Express and remains an integral part of Zemeckis’ approach to filmmaking.

Virtual Camera Systems literally put the camera back in the hands of the Director or their favorite Cinematographer. Chris and Eric were largely responsible for the climatic end of the dragon fight sequence. After having worked with Zemeckis, The Third Floor founders were inspired to develop their own virtual camera system. Now Real-time Directors Layout is being offered as a service to all of the filmmakers who work with The Third Floor.
